Veterinary jobs in the UK

Postby mango » Tue Dec 20, 2011 4:09 pm

Hi all,

I want to look into moving to the UK. I'm just brainstorming, for now.

I have no idea whether I'm talking about moving to Britain, Scotland, or Ireland, yet, and I need to do some research into each. Ideally, I would go and visit each place and see which one I like the best.

As I'm a veterinarian, I would need to find a job as such before actually moving. I can work in the UK without additional credentialing, as I did my schooling in Canada (part of the Commonwealth).

Problem: I don't know where to look for veterinary jobs in the UK.

Can any of you savvy internet researchers give me a few hints?

Thanks in advance. :D

You could try the UK Veterinary Associations. I'm sure they post jobs in their journals as they do here in the US. Newspapers in the major cities might also have listings for jobs. There is also a veterinary recruitment agency: http://www.carltonprofessional.co.uk/
I'm sure there are others. It might be easier if you know where you want to live and what kind of practice you want to do.

Sorry, couldn't resist ... we have them here, too!

That's OK, your card is probably already on its way, too late to stop it.

You two crack me up!

I'm still in the thinking stages. This may be another fly-by-night scheme that my mind is cooking up for my own amusement.
I guess I'll only know by doing the research!

Thanks for your replies. I will look into those links and suggestions.

Another thing I'm wondering is which are the nicest cities in the UK. They publish articles rating cities in the US all the time - I wonder if there are similar articles around regarding the UK.

Back soon with an update.

What kinds of environments appeal to you Mango? Are there certain factors that would attract you, others that would repel you?

There is one about 10 miles from me which I visit about once a year as I'm such a homebody, it seems like a different planet compared to where I live :D but it has some very nice features and is very historical.

Unity,

I think I would like to live in a small city that is relatively close to a larger city. That way, I could drive to the larger city for special occasions, or for more sophisticated entertainment (symphony, etc.). Somewhere safe, with a large enough population that there would be some likelihood of dating, but small enough that I could get to know my neighbors. Somewhere rural enough that there would be places to walk and hike. Enough amenities that I could find what I wanted/needed without too much trouble. A selection of pubs and restaurants. Close to a body of water.

Does that sound like anywhere you've ever been?

Not sure about my answer Mango, I'm too used to living in the middle of nowhere to imagine a place like that.
