I'm reading "Creative Blogging*" right now, and I really like it. It covers Wordpress as well as Blogger and TypePad and takes you from the very beginning (creating the account, choosing a domain name, etc.).
I've been blogging with Blogger for several years, and the book (which is very recent) helped me learn some new aspects of Blogger. Initially, I did also check out Wordpress, but I chose Blogger. Both are excellent platforms. The Wordpress site should have loads of tutorials, although that can be overwhelming.
Another thing the book showed me is just how pervasive Google really is, especially for those of us on Blogger. Fortunately, Google seems to understand that some folks might wish to keep their Blogspot / GMail / Picasa accounts "apparently separate."
Good luck and have a great time!
