W: Info on jobs at DHHS O: Can't find the info

Postby mango » Tue Oct 30, 2012 2:44 pm

Hi all,

I'd like to find out more about helping the people in the state/country who need help the most.

The Department of Health and Human Services (at least, that's what it's called here) seems like a good place to find information, but I can't seem to find any.

Wish:

Find out what types of jobs are available through agencies like DHHS, and what types of training are required.

Obstacle:

I cannot find the info!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Their website says you have to go to the local office for job openings. But they do have a link for a list of local offices on their page: http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dss/jobs/index.htm

I don't know where you live, but you could check for a county or city referral service; they probably have a list of similar agencies. Might be a place to start. You could also check the fed gov't job sites.

Thanks, Yonuh!

I will follow up on that information.
If all else fails, I might just show up in person and ask my questions!

What I really want to know is what the jobs actually are... As in, is everyone who works there a social worker?

What are the job titles of the people who help people in this field? Is the field technically 'social work'?
I don't have the names to search for what I want to find.

Thanks again! :D

Then I think your best bet would be to visit a local office and observe. but job listings usually have a job title and a job description; that should tell you the sorts of jobs they have. I'm sure there are others besides social workers in the local offices; clerical support at least. If you know someone who might know someone who works there, you're a step ahead. Network as much as you can - that can often get a foot in the door. Someone you know might know someone - you never know! Good luck!!

Thanks again, Yonuh!
Great idea.

Funny how it's impossible to find something when you don't know what it's called.

Hi Mango. Have you explored the main HHS website http://www.hhs.gov ? I think it has some answers to your questions.

On the main "Jobs" page http://www.hhs.gov/careers/index.html it says

"HHS employs individuals from diverse social and academic backgrounds into a full range of career fields and positions: doctors, nurses, biologists, social and physical scientists, economists, computer specialists, budget analysts, administrative and clerical specialists, and epidemiologists – to name a few."

The "Where Can I Work?" page http://www.hhs.gov/careers/where/index.html gives a list of the HHS divisions, with links to more specific job information for each one, and some "Example Opportunities". Here are three examples of the examples:

Administration on Aging (AoA)
Example Opportunities: Administrative Assistant, Elder Care Information Specialist

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Example Opportunities: Microbiologist, Historian, Health Science Administrators

Commissioned Corps
Example Opportunities: Doctor, Veterinarian, Dentist, Engineer

So no, definitely not just social workers, and there isn’t one term to describe them all, so that explains why you don't know what it's called :-)

Some other useful pages in the careers section are called: Find and Apply for Jobs, Pay and Benefits, Education and Training Programs.

The "About Us" page http://www.hhs.gov/about/ provides links to more info about the HHS e.g. contact details for each division, the experience and qualifications of the heads of the divisions, and a clickable map of the regions for more local information.

You might also check out a local office of United Way.
