one-on-one with special needs

Does anyone know how I might go about looking for a position working one on one with special-needs individuals (autism, cerebral palsy, etc) either as a classroom aide or adult job coach? And what additional training or certification would be involved?

In my area, all you need to do to become a classroom paraprofessional (para) is respond to the school's help wanted ad and get hired. AFAIK, there is minimal education required and no certification. But it helps if you have experience.

I would get in touch with the local support groups in your area. Network with parents of special needs children. Attend a seminar to learn about the IEP process so that you can learn the lingo such as goals, objectives, accommodations and even when it's appropriate to use restraints.
