Holy moly: :o I just finished reading this thread in one sitting: all seven years worth. :D My butt is numb, though. Anyway, I really needed to read all of it. I am stressed out trying to find some income streams while I wait for my dream jobs to come together. Working on a comprehensive graphic and illustration portfolio is taking some time. Here is another $100 an hour idea for some of you crafters. Make one-of-a-kind 3D art cards. Haunt the craft and thrift shops and pick up trim, silk or plastic plants, buttons, ribbon, whatever. You have a lot of this stuff laying around. Get pics of angles or something from old magazines, catalogs (copyright free) a glue gun and some Mod Podge and go for it. You can buy little wooden shapes for the base and put wire on the back for hanging. Put words on them like \"peace\" or \"Harmony\", or a wise quote. Sell at craft shows for whatever you can get for them. WG

If you have XP, download the free Photo Story 3 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... fault.mspx Have your client give you their photos and create for them a movie CD. You can attach any mp3 to the story. I just did this for a client and downloaded the music they wanted from Amazon for 90 cents. It took me maybe an hour of tweaking to get the transitions the way I wanted them. Charged them $60 for the CD and they are very happy.

I have seen applications like that mentioned on this thread several times. Doesn't Power Point do those things also? It's not free, though. WG

You can use Powerpoint, however, the problem comes when you send it to someone who doesn't have either the application or the free viewer. Creating movies using PhotoStory or Movie Maker allows you to create a WMV, which can be viewed by anyone with a player (Media Player, Real Player etc.)

Power Point actually does have a \"pack and go\" feature that packs the viewer with the presentation. Not trying to argue, just stating something that a lot of people may not know. :) WG

not sure if this is still going but - some ideas to make £50/$100... have a craft stall (create some art/ crafts and sell it) do a car boot sale (clear out your clutter!) sell some stuff on ebay/ amazon write some short stories and sell them to magazines create a website for someone (and charge them!) charge to be an informal taxi service (ie when you run people around - you might make £50 in a week?) create some art pieces and sell them through local galleries (even though they take 40%) there - that's given ME some thoughts too.! :D

Talk to me about genealogy. I could be extraordinarily gifted at this topic but have never had even a part-time business of my own before. I also see that this is going to take a lot more time and work than I am prepared to give right now without quitting my expected second-part-time-job-to-be (full-time worker, part-time student). Genealogy with that is just unrealistic, but I would gladly focus on the topic/art in exchange for money if I could do so.

Genealogy

Postby oceanz99 » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:54 pm

It has been a long time since I have done genealogy, but the topic is important to me, and I know how to do it well. Additionally, I am willing to improve my skills. I have major self-esteem barriers to doing so as a business for different reasons but am also concerned with the practical aspects of it. Somebody give me some insight. I may sit tight with this idea for a year but I still wish to get it going.

Any ideas how someone might do this? I have a talent for writing and once I learned how to write a resume' have found them easy to do. I'd love to move this from an idea to an income producing business. I guess my question is where to market it? PM me if you read this and need resume' help. - AL in Indy

I've had the good fortune in the past two years of experiencing several $100 hours. One of my first involved writing product reviews on marketing web forums and creating product review blogs. There are many products out there online that have affiliate programs that pay you for referring customers. Becoming an affiliate is usually free and you can review many products and write a review in little more than an hour. Include an affiliate link in your review and when people click on it after reading your review, you can earn a percentage of the sale. Amazon has an affiliate program (they call them associates) and offers a huge variety of products (their payouts are fairly small, but you can find almost any product imaginable to link to.) Ebay is another place that lets you refer customers and pays a percentage of every sale. I recently wrote a short e-book about How I Made My First $100 Online reviewing a marketing e-book I had purchased. In total I spent about 2-3 hours reading, reviewing, and responding to follow-up questions. I earned over $300 for my efforts (not to mention the income boost I got in other aspects of my business from the information in the e-book itself!) Other reviews I have written have had similar results. If you have a blog, you should definitely be looking for ways to include affiliate links whenever you recommend or mention products. Amazon is the best place to start for that. Andrew Seltz The Go-To Guy! http://www.GoToGuyEnterprises.com

Hi everyone. Haven't found the idea(s) yet that suits me and pays enough to get me out of this civil service/wage slave gig, but then again I'm only halfway through reading this great thread. In the meantime I thought I'd add another idea if it hasn't been mentioned yet. I've had a family member do this for me several times, just because he enjoys helping folks out this way; I woulda paid him if he had named his price: Electronics advisor/shopper He's a real techno-geek who is really into and up on all the latest electronic gadgets. He asks me a series of questions (or i tell him flat-out) what all i want to be able to do with the particular gadget in mind (ie, advanced features or just basic). He uses his various resources to research the latest products on the market, and best prices, and comes back to me with his recommendations. Since we live in the same town, he even went shopping with me and pointed out "buy this" or "you dont need this." He has also composed a lengthy yet easily readable/understandable email with his recommendations, and even provided links to online sources where I could purchase it. For someone like me who is easily overwhelmed by all the advances and complexity and choices in technology and electronics, it was nice having someone trustworthy to hold my hand through the process. I have suggested he hire himself out to do this, but he prefers working on his art. Must be nice to have dual marketable talents like that! Anyway, I bought my new desktop computer last year just from his recommendations (plus he set it up for me), and this year my new digital camera. Within the next year or two I will probably be returning to him to do the same thing for me for a cell phone, and a laptop computer. When I moved he even checked the back of my TV set to make sure all the cables between it and the DVD, VCR, cable were connected. He was over at my house anyway, and it took him all of 2 minutes to do so, but it was still an invaluable service.

Thought of three more in case they haven't been mentioned yet: Lonely people (or even one half of a couple where their partner isn't interested or available) might be willing to "hire a friend" -- someone to accompany them to a movie, theater, new restaurant, sightseeing, or even travel, stuff like that. Sorta like an escort, but non-sexual. Although it is becoming more socially acceptable to go places alone, sometimes it's easier (or more fun, or even cheaper) to do stuff like that with another person, especially being able to have a nice conversation about the experience afterward, or having someone to take your picture in front of various sightseeing landmarks (i usually travel alone and it gets old always having to depend on the kindness of strangers). Although I can see this being a valuable service for those of us who don't make friends easily, paying/charging someone to be a friend might be a little dicey; not sure exactly how to handle that aspect in a sensitive way. I would love to find someone trustworthy who could do for me what the stylists on What Not To Wear do for those lucky enough to have someone nominate them for the show. Make it a "Queen For A Lifetime" day: chauffered trip (with mimosa, and just drive them in your own car not necessarily a limo) to a spa/salon for massage and pedicure, hair and makeup makeover, and finally wardrobe overhaul and guided shopping trip to replace unflattering pieces with one's best look. If anyone knows of an already existing service in the Las Vegas area, I'll be your next customer. Home health care, for nursing or medical personnel, is supposedly going to be a hot career if it isn't already. Would probably be highly stressful, but for someone who likes caring for the ill or injured or elderly, the variety of job locations and clients, and able to set their own hours (or work odd ones) I can see where it could be a good self-employment or contract-type gig with an agency.

Custom Barbie dolls? Like for a dollmaker, make a Barbie that looks like me, that I can buy clothes for "off the rack" in any toy store...oh wait, never mind: Mattell doesn't make plus-size Barbie clothes (yet) Pin-back button maker? I thought about doing this at one time years ago. Woulda/coulda/shoulda... Make 1 for an individual, or 1,000+ for a nonprofit or commercial venture. Could use the client's own photo or camera-ready logo/artwork (or stock images), or a graphic artist could charge a little more to create an original design. Would require an initial expense of the button-making press, and recurring expense of supplies, but Badge-a-Minit (http://www.badge-a-minit.com/) is in business to supply folks doing this very kind of work. Could be a repetitive, almost boring venture making the actual buttons, especially for mass quantities, but it could be done in an evening or two while watching TV. This thread is so much fun...

Hi Nunya,,,,,,,,,,I liked your "suggestion" for an "escort" service or the "Hire a Friend Concept". I often thought about how much a parent would pay to take a troubled/shy kid to a carnival, ballgame, movie theatre (a Big Brother/Part time dad concept). Also how many people whether they be an Elderly shut-in who'd like to have someone to take them lawn saling or to a restaurant (and just have someone to chat with/ sounding board) or a wallflower/ non-cheerleader type who'd just appreciate a trustworthy escort to go to the movies with or shopping (rather than spending another lonely night alone)? How much could you charge for that? You're right it seems kinda "dicey"?? Yet by the same token folks pay a heck of a lot of money for booze, cigarettes, gambling & other vices? In this computer-age I think there's more lonely people than ever before. And they're hungering for some flesh & blood interaction as opposed to only "chat-rooms". It must be true since so many young ones start in chat rooms & wind up takin a bus to parts unknown to oftentimes meet (unbeknownst to them) some stalker/pervert. I think a Married woman would be "the toughest situation" to handle with class & avoid the obvious pitfalls . Unless in those cases if one teamed up with a female who would be the 3rd wheel to accomodate that? Hmmmmmmm How about people( going on vacation who can afford it)? Would they pay someone to tag along & chauffer them or take photographs? Any further suggestions would be appreciated. Is there a Market for that? And how much would be reasonable in the "average joe" world? Would this be a good time to have an "IDEA PARTY" invite some people over and find out what they think on a "LOCAL BASIS"? Here's an IDEA to contribute to the $100 hour,,,,,,,,,,,How much would a service be needed for folks who are moving far away (out of state etc.) who needed a "designated driver" to drive a truck or 2nd or 3rd vehicle?
