Income Stream

Postby Scopist » Tue Apr 08, 2014 2:02 pm

Hello, Forum: I'm new. Patty suggested I try here. My question:
I'd like an income stream. I had thought I might be able to set-up a website and offer my conversational services. I thought with the very busy schedule of Boomers, they might like someone to talk to their elderly parents--maybe the parents are in an assisted living facility. I wondered if this conversation-for-sale idea was doable. I wondered about liability and if it's doable, what should I charge. I thought $5 for each ten minutes.

Hi, Scopist,

I take it, you enjoy older people and have a talent for making them comfortable and happy.

Here are some ideas - take whatever sounds good to you.

I assume your idea is to just talk -take the place of the son or daughter who loves his/her parents but doesn't have the time to spend. It might be useful to have some topic in mind for a starter, and the conversation could just wander from there.

Writing memoirs is huge among older people. Would you like to help them write about their lives?
You could talk to the assisted living/nursing home facilities in your area and get a some suggestions of how to put your idea into practice.
I assume you envision talking on the phone. Any possibility of making visits in person? - Perhaps leading a class or some activity.
There is a telephone community called Seniors without Walls. It's a system of telephone calls and informational activities for shut-ins.
Music is very important, especially the "oldies".

That's all I can think of. I hope some of it is useful. Good luck with your project. There are certainly a lot of lonely seniors out there who would love to have someone to chat with.

How might it be if the conversation was a bonus?

Would you be willing to be an 'escort' - highly respectable, of course. For seniors who can afford to go out and would be happy to pay for company for the day or evening to visit theatre, galleries, shopping malls, beach, river or lake. And you take care of the details - including transport, mobility, dining, tickets - and chatting afterwards.

Helping them to make new friends who can then use your organising services to have unusual and interesting 'outings', meetings, connections to hobbies and crafts.

I'm not sure I'd want to have conversations on the meter - it would be like going to the doctor's. Would you stop half way through a word or sentence? It might be funny - yet I don't think I'd come back for more.

If you are frequenting assisted living places now - is there a sufficient population of seniors whose kids rarely see them - and whose kids would be relieved to know their parents or kin were being entertained and kept in touch with the wider world?

Depending on the products you offer - can that population provide the income stream you are wanting? Can you train other people? Can you branch out, if that suits you? Or keep the service specific to you (when you quit it stops - no royalty flow).

The notion is small green shoots at present - and may take you off onto something completely different, if you stick with it and don't rush to monetize too soon.
