I want to promote my parenting book on amazon for Christmas!

Postby teachthem » Fri Nov 08, 2013 2:57 pm

Hello!

I have a wish to promote and market my book for Christmas sales this year.

My book is on Amazon. It is also on my educational blog site. It is a book on parenting, an academic coaching guide for parents. I have drastically lowered the price of it to get it into as many hands as possible. (It will take a few more days for Amazon to update my new price which will be 5.99)

I am searching for methods on how I can effectively market it, to let the public know of its existence.

My obstacle is that I lack the knowledge as to how to promote and market my book/product.

I was recently told by my best friend, to ask for help. So here I am asking for help!

Do you have a Facebook page about the book? Can you send a press release to your local paper about "local author gets published?" See if your local bookstore will let you do a book signing and then make sure it gets in the paper.

Hi teachthem

It's the wee small hours of the morning where I am, but my brain doesn't want me to sleep any more, so I'm letting it brainstorm some ideas for you instead.

You can probably find some useful info in the Becoming Writers and Speakers forum on these boards viewforum.php?f=35

If you haven’t already done so, you can activate the “search inside this book” function on Amazon, which gives potential customers a preview
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/custome ... 00182580#b

Is it an e-book or a hard copy book? That could make a difference to your promotional methods. I guess you can widen your customer base by providing both, and maybe audio format too.

Many authors provide a few free copies in the hope of getting some good reviews on Amazon or elsewhere. Either free hard copies or free downloads for a short period.

In particular you could send copies to people who review books about education and parenting e.g. bloggers, print journalists, radio show hosts.

Facebook is one of the best places for marketing stuff. Develop a network of “friends” interested in parenting and education, and post interesting updates on your personal profile about those topics. Include some directly about the book, but don’t annoy people by getting too spammy. You could also set up a Facebook page specially for the book, and market it as much as you want there.

Twitter is also good. Tweet about education and parenting issues, and develop a network of people interested in those topics. Put a link to your book in your personal description. You can also do some direct promotional tweets, but not too many of them. And there are probably some regular relevant Twitter conversations with hashtags that you could join in to show your expertise, or start one of your own.

Search for places online where people are discussing parenting and education, and add helpful or interesting comments. But be careful about directly promoting your book which will probably be considered spam. You can usually put a link to your blog or website in your profile when you register, then if people like your comments they can find it by clicking your username. I’m thinking of places like blog comments, forums, online magazine & newspaper articles that allow comments, interest groups on social networks e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Amazon, Xing etc.

Author signing sessions are the traditional way of promoting hard copy books, but since your book isn't in the bookshops you'd have to think of alternative venues. You could bring copies to relevant events like conferences, workshops, book fairs, school open days, parent and teacher meetings, and just casually mention the book in conversations. Maybe you’d be allowed to set up a stall there to sell them, or ask someone else with a stall to sell them for you, or stick up a promotional notice on the wall, or advertise in their newsletter or printed program.

Offer to speak at a relevant public event, and provide copies for sale, or business cards or promotional leaflets with a link to Amazon.

Make helpful Youtube videos about parenting and education issues, with information about the book prominently displayed.

Put a form for people to sign up to your mailing list on your blog or website. Give them a reward of a regular newsletter, or a free chapter, or 10 best tips or something.

Offer a few copies of your book for competition or raffle prizes, online or in real life.

Set up a free blog talk radio station where you advise people about parenting and education, and promote your book. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/

Set up an author profile and promote your book here http://www.goodreads.com/

Write press releases and guest posts, or do interviews and guest teleclasses, for local or relevant specialised media. This can be online or off.

Great ideas Skannie. Make sure your interactions on the web aren't just "buy my book." That hard sell turns people off. Instead, participate in forums on the subject of your book with information, advice etc. You usually can have a link to your book in your signature.

I do have a facebook page but I am not yet happy with the look of it. I will look into the local author press release thing. Thank you!

Wow, thank you so much!

It is a hard copy and it does have the inside the book thing that amazon has created already.
I think I am going to look into the podcast thing

And I am thinking about teaching a teleconference class soon.

Someone who has a book on Amazon told me that the ratings really matter. If you can get lots of people to give you a four or five star rating that should help your visibility on Amazon.

Is it too late to help with your wish?

Consider forms of marketing that have high credibility by giving and not just selling. Some people "tune out" when they are being sold to.

- Do a video using your computer camera to make a 10 minute video for youtube in which you give the top 10 main points in the book and mention your book at the beginning and the end and let the youtube page have a link to your website. Redo the video as your "talk" improves each year.

- If you don't have a website and have obstacles with that, post that as another wish. Someone recently mentioned Weebly as an easier way to make a website.

- Buy your own book from Amazon (if it is permitted) using the same Amazon account that you used in the past to buy the books you used to do research for your book, including the number one selling competitor parenting book on Amazon. If I understand correctly, doing this will make your book appear in the list of books called "people who bought this also bought...".

- Are there radio bloggers that might have trouble developing guests because they are small and lesser known? If so, doing an interview with them will be doing them a favor.
