This person's also in London and may have information you could find useful:

http://www.screwworkletsplay.com/

He's a self-confessed Scanner, geek-sort-of, and has built his own income streams over the last few years.

He cites both the Barbaras - Sher and Winter.

Given the current state of the British economy, having several strings for your bow seems very very prudent. Even if you emigrate (Poland? Romania? ) being in the continuing process of building your skill set is life-long prudent.

I've heard engineering described as an umbrella career. Usually you need a B.S. in an engineering discipline (mechanical, civil, electrical, etc.). My job is autonomous to a large degree if there are no critical projects. I analyze and synthesize data, information, processes. I'm always learning something new; in fact I need to keep learning to be effective. One downside is that a project can last for months, and if it's a crappy one, going to work is dreadful. I have flexible hours, and I can work from home occasionally. I also happen to get four weeks vacation every year, but no money to take one, so I'm trying to start short term consulting stints.
