Wish:To Host an"Internet Detox"Retreat with 1 or more people

Postby Mariya » Mon Nov 05, 2018 4:07 pm

My wish is to host a retreat that helps people stay offline, a fun retreat where people don't use electronics at all, and I would like for it to not be dependent on one location, I'd also like to host it with a partner or a few people. I even have some activities planned for it already.

Edit: Maybe it could start off in one location, like a ranch or something, preferably somewhere with lots of nature and pine trees, I love those.

Obstacles: I don't know anyone who would be interested in hosting it with me, Lack of money, and I don't even know how to make it happen.

What do you think? Thanks in advance!

P.S. Thank you so much to Barbara and her Tedx video, it gave me hope!

Isn't there something similar that Orthodox Jews do? Don't they turn off all electrical appliances on Friday night?

Maybe as a first step to your wish, you could host a retreat like that at your home(or a park or campsite) for one day. If you get something like that going, let us know.

You could send invitations by snail mail.

You could send a challenge over the Internet. "November 31st is Internet Detox Day take the challenge of spending a day without the net." Nanowrimo is a challenge to write 50,000 words in one month, and people all over the world sign up for it. Of course it relies on the Internet to encourage all of us, but maybe there's an idea there you could use.

I just have to say that I like the idea of a day of detox from the net. People are texting so much, they're forgetting how to talk. I would agree to do a day without the net.

What activities are you planning?

If you started even smaller, and call it a party instead of a retreat, you could plan it and have it within a couple of weeks. Call it an idea party, and for your wish and obstacle ask for ideas on how to host an internet detox retreat. Gather some friends to go camping.

By the way, these ideas are yours to take or discard as you see fit.

I really hope you do it, because it sounds like a great idea.

Thank you for your responses! The reason why I called this a retreat is because I want it to last 7 days! It might sound intense but it’s incredible and rejuvenating! I have a whole story I could share about how I did it! I used to do one day per week but that’s not enough for sensitive folks like me! Also, of course I would have plenty of activities planned that would be fun for everyone, including getting back in touch with nature and humanity face to face. I’d have a party, sure, but I only have one friend who isn’t really busy and I already challenged him to do a day offline which he may come around to doing!

A week without the Internet. Wow! It sounds wonderful, but a bit trickier than just a day or two. Has anyone ever done something like that before? I mean after the net was invented. I'm trying to remember what it was like before we all had computers. Nope - can't remember.

Haha, yes some people have, I saw online! It's really great! How would I create a party to meet new people with ideas? Can it be done here?

I hope you get your wish. SOME thoughts and ideas:

I think you'd have better luck finding people if you think locally. I live in California. We have a website called "Next Door - and then there's a separate address for each community. The idea is for neighbors to get to know each other and share information that applies to them only. For example lost dog . house break-in garage sale house cleaning service available and so on. On a site like that you'll get people who live near you. I'd also consider non-Internet ways to get in touch with people. Snail mail neighborhood party, poster at a store like REI that sells camping gear.

I'd also consider the time element. People who work would probably be able to take a week off in summer. Teachers have a longer summer vacations and might love a week away from the net. ALSO retired people, might have free time and would love to spend a week away from the Internet. Note that some retired people are busier than when they had jobs.

You could also host an idea party.

I love this site, and, much as I love to attract people to these Boards, I think we're too scattered for your purpose.

If you're willing to share it, I'd love to hear about what you did that made you choose this wish.

I'd also be interested in any ideas you have about activities. - but only if you're willing to share them. I;m fixing up my back yard and I want to have parties there, and I'm looking for ideas. I have a fire pit for campfire singing and marshmallow roasts. A swing. hula hoops water games for kids for summer. WE can do music and dancing.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone! These are all wonderful ideas! All people would be welcome to my retreat! I’m not sure how to arrange a party, I live in Brooklyn New York. It would be best to meet at a café probably. And Elaine, your home sounds wonderful! I’d love to host it at a place like that! Those activities sound wonderful! I think just about anything that naturally gets people back in touch with themselves and how people lived before the internet would be a fun activity. I’ve been so addicted to the internet that i’d spend almost all day online, every day, so I gradually challenged myself to different digital detoxes which helped a lot and I saw a huge improvement in my mood and how I feel so I’d love to help others do the same in a place where they feel supported and can have fun! Swim, dance, laugh, sing, share stories, be silly!

Congratulations, you now have beautiful ideas buzzing around in your head. What's next?

Maybe you'll take one of the ideas, go with it, and have your detox retreat in a couple of months. If so, please come back and tell us about it.

Or, you''ll go to that coffee shop, meet someone who thinks the way you do, and the two of you will plan a terrific retreat. Again, tell us about it.

Or you'll start working on your idea, hit a snag or two, and decide it's just too hard or intimidating. This is why Barbara Sher wrote WIshcraft.
If you hit a stumbling block, you need friends, either peopled you talk to face to face, or Internet friends, or, preferably, both. But you need friends. If you run into a problem you can't solve, maybe someone else will have the answer for you. If you have to make a phone call that scares you, or you just get fed-up, tired, or bored, your friends will encourage you.

Your wish is possible. Very possible. I wish I lived in New York. I wish I could still go camping.

Good luck.

I just wanted to tell you, after watching that video that Tituba posted the link to, and after internet-chatting with you, I know I want to do an Internet detox. I know that some habits of mine are unhealthy.

Now that I've decided to actually do it, I'm trying to figure out when and how. One problem - obviously, the Internet and TV have some very useful aspects as well as some unhealthy one. The couple in the video made some rules about what they would and wouldn't do during their detox. That's what I'm trying to figure out - what to keep and what to throw away.

And I'm getting to the part of writing where I need to use social media to get people to notice me. At this point, I'll try first a day without Internet, then a week with minimal Internet. then figure out how to incorporate a healthier lifestyle in terms of the Internet.

Thanks, Maryia, for posting this.
