The Independent Scholar's Handbook

Postby skannie » Mon Oct 27, 2008 1:41 am

You can download The Independent Scholar's Handbook by Ronald Gross as a free pdf file from here. http://www.sfu.ca/independentscholars/isbook.htm Note that it's 322 pages long and almost 17 megabytes in size, so it won't download very quickly. It's an American book even though it's on the website of the Canadian Academy of Independent Scholars. It's a bit out of date and not perfectly scanned, but there's lots of food for thought in it. Some of the resources listed on the links page are worth looking at too. Members can also go to their monthly meetings in Vancouver, use the university library facilities, and get other benefits.

I Love Sketch http://www.ilovesketch.com/ A 3D curve sketching system that captures some of the affordances of pen and paper for professional designers, allowing them to iterate directly on concept 3D curve models. Novel contributions of the system include automatic view rotation to improve curve sketchability, an axis widget for sketch surface selection, and implicitly inferred changes between sketching techniques. ======================================================================================================== http://www.lifehack.org/articles/money/ ... e-for.html Web sites where you can make small amounts of money by writing.

Peer-to-peer support community for media production professionals: http://forums.creativecow.net/ Very cool and creative! Download their free magazine. Description of the current issue: The visual effects issue of Creative COW Magazine is filled with ideas, inspiration, techniques and projects from the world of visual effects. Featuring some of the top artists from television and film, the issue takes you inside the incredible visual feast that you see in Warner Bros' ``Pushing Daisies`` -- arguably the most beautiful television world ever created. Then go into the world of invisible effects, looking at the magic created that the audience will never see -- and why these kinds of effects are often more important than the visual and special effects that wow audiences. Also in this issue is an artist who shows how to improvise effects in the production crucible of on-set production -- meeting the needs of the production that weren't planned or storyboarded. Learn the power of shadow effects in your lighting. And in this issue, you will also learn about depth of field converters and the state of Blu-ray production today. This may be our very best issue yet. You decide.

This website might be interesting for scanners looking for freelance jobs in Germany or to participate in developing new ideas. It's a kind of think-tank. You can participate in one-day-projects and / or register to be contacted as an expert in one or in various fields. http://www.ideasinternational.eu

http://www.stumbleupon.com very possibly the best thing to ever happen to scanners. free. you can access the toolbar without registering, but if you do register, you can download the toolbar and set your preferences as to what topics you're interested in. Hit the "Stumble" button, and get transported to sites all over the net recommended by other users. thumb it up if you like it, down if you don't. the algorithm will adjust the sites you're sent to fit your interests and tastes. i've discovered tens of thousands of sites i'd never have imagined were out there, simply thru using my stumble button. :) Next: 100 Extensive University Libraries from Around the World that Anyone Can Access http://www.collegedegree.com/library/co ... _the_world and: 100 Awesome Blogs for History Junkies [deleted at the request of the site linked to] and one of my absolute favorite resources, since i'm a language freak: Word2Word.com http://www.word2word.com/coursead.html lists a hundred+ languages, and has links to sites around the web where one can find free lessons in each. Links are kept fresh.

Hi All! Here's one I have to share with all my fellow scanners. This is a collection of links to sites that offer free classes in almost any subject you can think of and then some! They also have some links to interesting info here. Enjoy! http://www.selfmadescholar.com/classes.html
