Thanks so much for these videos from France, Barbara. …The ‘penny dropped’ for me. I’ve put together the following, with yesterday’s Newsletter…and, if it is correct and appropriate, I would like to pass this document on as info about Barbara Sher, to those I know are interested. I’d also like to post it on your boards, with your permission. Barbara’s June 18, 2009 Newsletter… Hi Friends, If you'd like to receive early notice of all my events, before the newsletter rolls out, here is what to do: Go to Twitter.com and search for #SherEvents. Everything I do will be there first. It can take a week or more to update the webpages with new dates, photos, fees, descriptions, but the shortest distance between scheduling an event (like a Scanner retreat, or a WriteSpeak program, or one of those $10 interactive teleclasses I love to run) and informing you of it, is Twitter. Twitter is turning out to be very fine. Every day I read of new ways to use it. Regarding my stuff, we have the Twitter #ideaparty where we launch dreams, the Twitter book club at #booktweet where we're going through Wishcraft and now, #SherEvents where I can pop in new upcoming events as soon as I schedule them. And that's nothing to what I'm planning to try in the near future. (Watch this space :-) I am totally sold on Twitter. If you're not, you must understand that resistance is futile. I'll nag you til you give in anyway, so it's best to succumb and join. If you follow me on Twitter (I'm @BarbaraSher - not hard to remember) you can tweet me a question, and I'll do my best to answer it. For you that's called 'access.' For me it's called interesting. If you've got a minute, take a look at my first video clip from the most recent Scanner retreat. I'm telling everyone, as persuasively as I can, to understand why it's essential to do what you love. Nothing fluffy or woo-woo about it. What you love is what you are gifted at, because that's how DNA tells you what you were designed to do. Let me warn you that we didn't have professional lighting and I mumble something awful, but the message is what matters. You'll see. Note: Please ignore the YouTube Related Videos from the movie "Scanners," because they're about people's heads exploding and so far that hasn't actually happened. I got a really funny translation in the mail the other day, obviously done by a computer. It seems to have originally been in French, maybe from Quebec. It's wonderful to know that they're talking about Scanners all over the world because that means more and more people will understand that there is nothing wrong with them. As you'll see in the letters further down, discovering that you're a Scanner is incredibly important. The problem is that some computerized translations aren't so easy to understand. If you got this and didn't know you were a Scanner, would it make you glad? (Or maybe this is what makes Scanners heads explode!) "Un blog utilisant Le Blogue du Québec (or, How's That Computer Translation Program Working For You?) SCANNER TRIBE ON THE UNSCATHED -- ARE YOU A SCANNER? Many people call with projection when they critique Refuse to Choose in favour of the chief later. (It's Barbara Sher's tome with the brand of people she calls Scanners.) I certain that because they bear down on onto her despatch boards and bruit about so, and more recently on Twitter too. Because your behavior is bizarre unacquainted with - regulated perturbing - to the people circa you, you've been taught that you're doing something off the beam and you have to examine to brand...Not only would that be unfair and flawed, it could block you from developing your gifts and making your contribution to the on cloud nine. You are the hotel-keeper of a uncommon, multi brilliant brains taxing to do its work up in a on cloud nine I have a sneaking second thoughts the comply that causes the most tears may be a feel discomfited put on tucked in between the Acknowledgements and the Prologue, on pages vii and viii, sooner than the becoming bellhop numbering begins. They give birth to artlessly been misunderstood first encounter to their brains working in an unorthodox mode. Its inscription is Are You a Scanner? Now, I confess I don't want to hear that you "....bruit about so," on my bulletin board. I don't know what that means but I'm sure it's not the right thing to do. Still, that last question is a reasonable one: Are you a Scanner? If you think you might be, you'll enjoy these two short letters. Dear Barbara, No kidding: I just scanned the first 60 pages of your newest book "Refuse to Choose"!!! It took me about 30 minutes and yes, I will go back and read it all in detail and yes, I will start a daybook and develop a HUGE wall calendar! You must get thousands of e-mails as full of excitement as this one but believe me, I AM SO EXCITED! I NEVER KNEW I WAS A SCANNER! I am the only person I know that has done so many different things work-wise and otherwise and still do not get to do many of the things I feel passionalte about because there are so many and I am paralyzed by the choices and the lack of time!!! I try almost anything and invariably, soon move on to the next. Everyone tells me that I can do almost anything and once I get focussed on something the outcome is of a high caliber. It is now 12:12 am and I am sneezing and have a sore throat so I must sleep BUT I just had to write this e-mail to you. I can't wait to start your book a-new tomorrow- and do it properly this time! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have always known that I could do anything I wanted and set my mind to doing, but I could never understand why I just couldn't choose one passion and path to follow! Wow! Now I understand. Yes, feel free to post or print any part of my letter... Thank you. Lidia Did you see yourself in that letter somewhere? If so, here's another one I got a few days ago. It shows what a huge difference it makes once a Scanner understands who she is: Dear Barbara, Well! I just had to share with you the latest interview I had for a job because you are responsible for the turn around in my attitude (it's a good thing). I was asked to come in and discuss "social media" with a high profile local company. They were about to embark on a campaign and wanted to know how I could help them. Before we began the formal part of the meeting the person in charge asked me to give them a brief rundown of my career history. Before I learned about Scanners that question usually sent me into a string of apologies because I have never stayed in any job for very long (three years max.), and then I was a stay at home mom for ten years before re-entering the workforce part-time. The apologetic stance I used to take did NOTHING to impress people, as you can imagine. But this time I just explained, with a huge amount of confidence, my job history and educational background and simply said that I liked variety and when I became very good at things I moved on to something else, but I'm still in the learning phase of social media so I'm here for awhile. I have to say, when you put a positive spin on the things you've done you receive completely different reactions! Do you know I think they were even a little intimidated? -- Or maybe that's just the way I read their silence when I'd finished. Thanks to you I now accept the type of person I am and no longer look at specialist doctors, lawyers and accountants with 20+ year careers and envy them (well maybe a little), but that's not who I am and I never will be. I'm working on three major projects at the moment. They will all take more time than I've mapped out to finish, but I'll get them done and I'm no longer panicking that I'm just spinning my wheels with my lack of a "traditional career." Thank you, thank you thank you for your enlightening message!!!!! Sincerely, RC When I see my work making that kind of difference, it makes me feel very, very good. Another entertaining newsletter, as usual from Barbara. It's the only one I wish would come more often. I was laughing out loud when I read the machine translation, and at the same time thinking there was something strangely familiar about it. It was only near the end I was astonished to realise that it's a mangled up version of one of my own posts on my Scanner Tribe blog at http://www.scannertribe.com/2009/06/04/ ... -a-scanner At first I thought it had probably been translated by machine twice to make it so bad - into French and back again. But after a bit of experimentation and detective work I came to the conclusion that it's not a translation. Although I am fairly sure a machine or software robot was involved in making it almost unreadable. So I'm planning to write another blog post about how I think it happened. I'll let you all know when it's done.
Thanks for clearing that up, Skannie! I have read a translation of a website from Slovenian to English, and, believe it or not, I was able to understand it, pretty closely. But, this one, was completely...well...mangled. I would very much like to know how it got that way. Surely no program would want to make your good posts sound almost as though they were derogatory! And then, maybe I could get some machine to translate from English to Taiwanese, to say 'Hello' to a pal...in such a way that it is polite, and thoughtful. However, we do have Jane, who lives on Taiwan...a Success Team leader. English seems to be your first language...you are so fluent in it. And your ideas are always spot on. My best, Mahara
