August 2013 "Write a really bad poem per day" Challenge!

Postby inspiresuccess » Sun Aug 04, 2013 8:21 pm

Hello everyone,

I've started writing poetry again. Everything I write sounds dreadful and I'm having a hard time staying motivated. So, I'd love to have some poets and would-be poets out there join me in making it a daily goal to WRITE ONE REALLY BAD POEM PER DAY! We can all accomplish that, can't we?!!!

The only guideline (for me, anyway) is that the poem have a beginning, middle, and an end. That's because I have a habit of just writing and writing and writing and never finishing anything.

You don't have to share the poems themselves (unless you really want to). The goal is to get the poem written and then check in and share your process with us. How did it go? How did you do? How do you feel now that you've gotten A POEM FINISHED? Whew!

I can't wait to see who joins me in this challenge.

What if you've never written a poem in your life? But you'd like to! Or you haven't written a poem in 30 years but would like to try again. Or, maybe ......................................

Well, let's wait and see who shows up to the REALLY BAD POETRY PARTY! Everyone is invited!

Who's to say what's good, what's bad?
Suppose it comes out good?
Have I failed?

Beginnings, endings and middles,
all poems have these!
Silly to think otherwise.

Speaking of which
(endings that is)
Seems like a good place for one.

BTW, congrats on writing poetry again! Please come back and add yours!

The Vogons are considered to be very good at writing bad poetry. But according to the same reference (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), "the absolute worst poetry was written by Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Sussex."

Beans and greens for lunch today
saved me from buying my meal.

Yet it's not so filling
and so I'm glad
I had a hamburger
for breakfast.

The bears that came today
ate from our garbage,
sucking from discarded
packets of duck sauce.

Wonder what they'd think
of my beans and greens?

Write one bad poem every day.
Hope I have enough to say.
squirrels, scarecrows, slaw and stuff,
Hope this poem is bad enough.

Whatever happened
to gentle rains
and dustings of snows?

Too often we get a deluge
or blizzards.

And sunny days seem
blindingly brilliant.

Is it really an age
of weather extremes?
Or just my extreme age?

Ode to a Bag of Liver Snacks Left Unguarded.

How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.

Chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp chomp chomp gulp.
That's seven.

By Molly the Border Collie

P.S. I'm not going to do one every day, but this is fun.

Libraries used to be
such quiet places
in which librarians used to whisper.

Now they're talking loudly
about their vacations
and petunias

Thank goodness for my ear plugs!

What a Year

In January I started a diet
Of potato chips

In February I weighed myself
WOW - never again

In March
I discovered the joy of marshmallow spread

In April
Never got off the couch

In May
It rained

In June
I learned to swim

In July
The lifeguard fell in love
with my friend

In August
I was asked to be an alternative artist's model
Because I was fat and round

In September
I went on another diet

In October
I had pumpkin pie, no cream

In November
My old jeans fit again

In December
I ate too much at Christmas
but didn't gain

Hello, everyone.
I've been searching for a place to live which is very depressing and discouraging. I thought I'd try to write poetry daily to have someplace to put all my bad feelings down on paper. I thought if I made it fun and silly I could get past any need to write something "good". My definition of "good" is whatever makes the poet who wrote it say, "I like that poem that I wrote".

The way I make poems is to just write and write in prose/poetry pages. Then I go back and pick out phrases and words I like and put together a poem.

I wrote on July 31, then Aug 2,3,4,6. Then wrote nothing Aug 7, 8, 9, 10. Today August 11 I did write. So far, I have not put together a poem. I'm glad that I'm writing in my poem journal. It's a start. And today I read through what I'd written and underlined phrases I liked. But no poem yet. Here is the list of phrases I liked:

pounding through the jack-hammers of my soul
cut off the hands of ridicule
leaning on the toxic divide
the delusions of menace
arched over innocent drivel
restless ruin
simplicity dismembered
like artifacts waiting for discovery
pity's cascade
like broken toys
the soul's sweet need of courage
I could taste fire

Maybe I'll take these and see if I can fashion a poem from one or some of them.

Thank you for the response to the thread so far. I feel terribly depressed today but pushed myself to write in my poem journal and write here. I figured I really should respond to my own thread! So here I am. I'm going to try to go back to writing daily.

Before I started the thread I had started reading "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. She is a writer who does zen meditation and sees writing daily as a zen writing practice. That's what motivated me to start writing the poem journal in the first place.

Reading the responses to the thread put a smile on my face, which is hard to do when depressed. So, thanks, guys, for sharing your poems.

Today I can't sign this, Inspire Success, because today I feel like Uninspired Mess. Maybe that will be my new name here, at least for awhile.

Unity1, Square Peg, I like your poems.

Thanks for thinking up this thread, Inspire. It's been fun writing on it and reading other people's poetry. Sorry you're having some bad days. I hope the bad mood lifts.

By the way, you're not trying to write - SHOCK, SHOCK, SHOCK!!! - GOOD POETRY, - are you??????

the pigs ate my breakfast
the dogs ate my lunch
the swallows had dinner
I had nothing to munch

if an ant ate my snack
I'd give it a smack
if the cows drank my milk
I'd say, "give it back!"

How's that for bad, Elaine????? Believe me, I can do bad if I try!

P is for that Poe guy, Edgar Allan,
O means that my humor's rather odd.
E is for Elizabeth and Emily,
T, we're treading where the mighty trod.
R is for the Roberts - Frost and Browning;
Y can't I find something else to do?
Put them all together they spell Po - try.
iamb, troche, sonnets, we love you.

How you folks manage
to make poems that rhyme
I can't imagine.

Does our world rhyme? No....

But then I chance upon
a mis-fired seed from a
watermeleon
nestled in the fur of the dog.

Nature's rhyme beheld in a
watermeleon seed
and dog tick

How sublime
