I am so, so,grateful to live in California!

It's January. It's 70 degrees outside! It's sunny! There's no snow! I have FLOWERS BLOOMING on my patio (cyclamens). There are FLOWERS BLOOMING at my therapists office (camelias)! Am I lucky, or what?

I grew up in upstate New York out in the country, but fairly close to Buffalo, where my grandparents lived. I see the news now about where I grew up. I remember the word "blizzard" and what that actually meant.

I've lived in California for FORTY YEARS and I never, ever take the weather for granted.

Okay, for anyone reading this whose feeling jealous -- everything has a downside, of course. The downside is it's 90-100 degrees here for half the year! And it does rain, A LOT!, during non-drought years. It once rained 27 out of 28 days in February. Rain makes me really depressed! So, does that balance it out a little for those feeling jealous? I hope so.

But just for today -- THE WEATHER IS INCREDIBLE!

Tonight I'm grateful for two things.

1. My rocking chair. When I'm really upset just rocking even for a few minutes helps me calm down.

2. I got to take a long, hot bubble bath. This also helped calm me down.

Think of all the people in the world who don't have any running water. And I get to take a one-hour-long bubble bath. I'm a lucky person.

Today I am grateful for libraries, which have provided me with free books to read since I was 4 years old. I'm almost 60. That's FIFTY-SIX (56!) years of free books to read! I'm also grateful that we live in a country that has public libraries.

Today I am grateful for my library volunteer, Emily, who picks up the books I've ordered from the library online, and who returns my overdue books. The volunteers in my library do this for people who are without transportation or who are too ill or too old to go to the library in person. Blessed are the volunteers!

Yes, for libraries. I re-discovered them a couple of years ago. They are awesome. :D

I'm thankful that my mother in law is okay.
And I'm thankful for my writers' group.

Today I'm grateful for clouds. Big, beautiful, fluffy, changing throughout the day clouds. We don't get many clouds in California. It's one of the few weather things that I miss about the east coast where I grew up. But today we had the most gorgeous clouds.

We are having a challenging winter (last week a blizzard - 31" of snow, two days later another 24" - today another 24" and next week a forecast of another 24"). I can't see out of my windows anymore as the snow is piled up to the top.

I'm grateful that I have a roof over my head, heat and am safe. There is plenty of food in the house, we haven't lost power and my cat is resting peacefully.

Tituba,

I'm grateful that you are safe and comfortable. I grew up in Upstate New York and I remember the blizzards well. I'm so glad that you have heat, food, safety, and comfort. And a happy kitty. I REALLY MISS having cats!

Mostly I'm thankful that Molly's okay.

Also, for a day of doing almost nothing. Don't like to do that too often, but I think today I needed one of those days.

Molly looked really sick. Her back legs came out from under her, her eyes twitched, and I thought it was the end. The vet said, it was canine vertigo a benign illness that older pets can get. A second vet, my local vet hydrated her, gave her some anti-nausea meds, and she steadily improved over about five days. Today, she's perfectly normal. So I'm grateful that she's fine and I'm grateful for both vets who treated her.

Also Tituba, I'm glad you're warm and dry.
