Quotes about MUSIC

Postby inspiresuccess » Mon Feb 02, 2015 4:34 pm

Nothing exists without music, for the universe itself is said to have been framed by a kind of harmony of sounds, and the heaven itself revolves under the tones of that harmony.
Isidore of Seville

Music moves us, and we know not why; we feel the tears but cannot trace the source. Is it the language of some other state, born of its memory? For what can wake the soul's strong instinct of another world like music?
L. E. Landon

Music is the only innocent and unpunished passion.
Sydney Smith

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Berthhold Auerbach

When I play, I make love – it is the same thing.
Artur Rubinstein

When people hear good music, it makes them homesick for something they never had and never will have.

Some humorous quotes about music:

"My whole trick is to keep the tune well out in front. If I play Tchaikovsky, I play his melodies and skip his spiritual struggle." Liberace

"When she started to play, Steinway himself came down personally and rubbed his name off the piano".
Bob Hope, on comedienne Phyllis Diller

"I really don't know whether any place contains more pianists than Paris, or whether you can find more asses and virtuosos anywhere".
Frederic Chopin

"The buck stops here. I don't share blame, I don't share credit, and I don't share desserts".
Beverly Sills

"Oh, how wonderful, really wonderful opera would be if there were no singers!"
Rossini

Liked the Steinway quote.

Music has not been a part of my life until recently. Some of my friends have a lot of musical talent and they talk about hearing music and having their lives changed by it. I want that. It doesn't touch me that deeply, but I have heard pieces that have made me cry. So I'm trying to cultivate an appreciation for it. By that I mean listen and enjoy.

Hi Elaine,

I'm so glad you're open to discovering the joy of music! Sometimes, it's a matter of finding the right music that will touch you in a very personal way.

Here's my advice (from teaching my class and my masters thesis on music!)

The RADIO is the best way to experiment with music to find what works for you. Use the "SCAN" button and let it skip around until something catches your attention. Then listen to that station for a little bit and "BE OPEN". Sometimes, we have an idea that we don't like a type of music and just shut it off before we even give it a chance.

YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED to find out you like a type of music that you would never have guessed you liked. Just leave that station on your car radio for a few days so that you can hear a range of artists within that genre. Again, people hear one piece of music and make the assumption that they don't like that genre based on ONE SONG! Give a chance. If after 3-4 days, you haven't heard ANY SONGS on that station that you like, then go back to the "SCAN BUTTON" and move on.

Good luck! Let me know if you discover something surprising!

I liked the very first one. There is really a celestial vibration resonating through our Universe. Heck, even in my backyard on a summer night, the music of nature is exquisite.

Oh yes, I agree with Rossini. I'm sure I'd like opera better without all the vocals.

Here's one:
The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes -- ah, that is where the art resides!
-- Schnabel

Thanks for the quote. One of Beethoven's most famous pieces relies on the silence in between the notes.

Da-da-Dum (silence) Da-da-Dum (silence)

I'll find the actual piece and post it.

This isn't directly about music, but I really like the reference to music and nature. It's the beginner of a poem by Pablo Neruda.

Luminous grace!
Invisible

of music
in the leaves,
sacred conversation!
