Other People's Wonderful Quotes

Postby BarbaraSher » Thu Aug 05, 1999 7:24 am

Paul Hawken, in a book that has become a favorite of many of us, GROWING A BUSINESS, says "Being in business is not about making money. It is a way to become who you are." I got this quote from Barbara Winter's book, also mentioned in the "Finds" forum, MAKING A LIVING WITHOUT A JOB, in which she mentions a recent survey of people who left the 9-5 world: "The survey reported that 85 percent feel more relaxed working from home, 40 percent enjoy a healthier diet, 39 percent take more time off, 38 percent exercise more often, 32 percent feel they have a better marriage or sex life, 98 percent are happier in general, 96 percent would recommend working from home to other people, and 88 percent say they would never return to the coporate world again." most people would succeed in small things, if they were not troubled with great ambitions" Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 1807-1882 "Being a parent is a great spiritual practice. There is no greater opportunity for the squashing of ego and the exercise of patience & love" Tenzin Palmo

My friend Susan, in reassuring me about my frustrations, had this to say: "Everything good starts out hard." Hee! ------------------ Jacque Marshall http://www.eskimo.com/~jacquem

From my friend Zhenya, for dealing with overweaning perfectionism: "Anything worth doing is worth doing half-assed." I can't tell you how much time that's saved me....

It's me again... when I saw this quotation area, I *HAD* to dive in as collecting motivational quotations is one of my "things"... Thanks for indulging me: "You have been sold on the need to be like everybody else, to follow the leader! But that is not the kind of living which results in individual leadership or world leadership. Have the courage to bring forth the wealth of stuff which lies unused within you. Permit the hopes, goodness, love of beauty, the desire to achieve, and the will to better yourself--permit all of these to well up from within." --Roda Lachar And then: "Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse... you must first BE who you really are, then DO what you need to do, in order to HAVE what you want." --Margaret Young And finally: "To know what you prefer instead of humbly saying "Amen" to what the world tells you you OUGHT to prefer is to have kept your soul alive." --Robert Louis Stevenson Thanks everyone! From LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE, but written by Henry David Thoreau: "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

Panhandler downtown the other day had a cardboard sign: "Will take verbal abuse for spare change." I nearly fell over laughing. I tolk him he was nuts: he should hire out to corporate executives and charge $200/hour for the service!
