I'm also thinking of taking steps to lower my blood pressure. Recently I got 147/88 at a free self-serve station. But my PCP also has taken similar high readings.

Hi SquarePeg,

You're welcome to pose questions and post progress here. We might as well learn together.

Primary Care Physician, the regular, non-specialist doctor. Sorry Elaine.

white coats

Postby Lynx » Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:11 am

Had a visit to the dentist and man were my #s higher. But this was more than a routine cleaning (two fillings were on the menu).

Anyway, they went through the ritual of "what are you doing about this" etc. The asst had no clue what I was talking about when I talked about what I was doing.

We carry on,

My sister told me that she lowered her blood pressure 30 points by doing the four minute workout featured on Zach Bush's "The M Clinic" website. (I didn't think to ask her what it was before or after, though.)

The idea is to do a brief anaerobic workout a few times each day to stimulate the body's production of Nitric Oxide. This has the effect of dilating blood vessels, which should lower blood pressure. The body can replenish its supply of Nitric Oxide in 90 minutes, so folks are encouraged to do the routine every few hours.

I did my first three sets about 45 minutes ago. (Gosh, I'm in terrible shape!) But I can do this!

4 minutes workout

Postby Lynx » Sun Jul 22, 2018 9:04 am

Hi SquarePeg,

Super thx for this. Did my first set right away (it's only four minutes). Did middling well, better at the start.

I didn't begin with a baseline reading. So in a couple of hours I'll take my #s and do another set and take them again soon after and start the data collection.

Thanks for this. I was feeling mid-couraged and needed a booster idea.

Might be interesting to do this before a white coat encounter (perhaps in a stairwell or empty bathroom) if there's a quick drop.

Hm.

I was wondering if there would be a quick drop, too.

I also wonder if holding one's breath can bring about a brief vasodialation. I know I can decongest my nasal passages this way right before using a neti pot.

Hi SquarePeg,

Found this survey of various methods using breathwork: https://perma.cc/F5AD-LTCY

I've experienced some of this. I've taken workshops from many approaches but it never felt useful or needed enough to work into my daily habits. Maybe now it is?

4 minute workout - I begin

Postby Lynx » Sun Aug 05, 2018 10:56 pm

Hello,

I've thought about this exercise thing and how to simply begin. Thinking I need to run this forever is too much to bite off.

  1. 6/15/17 :: 152/90.63
  2. 7/30/17 :: 148/88.50
  3. 9/16/17 :: 140/80.53
  4. 9/29/17 :: 143/83.51
  5. 1/12/18 :: 147/86.57
  6. 4/25/18 :: 168/82
  7. 8/5/18:: 138/72.52 and later after the 1st 4 minute set: 150/80.53

Nice to see I've broken the 140 barrier.

I looked at the "Hypoxia" website briefly. Interesting site with lots of references. Definitely worth reading in detail.

I have sleep apnea, so I can experience Intermittent Hypoxia all night long if I don't use my CPAP machine. My wife underwent hyperbaric oxygen treatment five days a week for 8 weeks to close a chronic wound. It turned out that the wound developed a tumor! So I wouldn't be surprised if modulating O2 levels can alter disease trajectories.

Well done on coming out below 140 on Sunday!
