150 Steps for December '09

OK, here's the challenge. Take 150 steps towards your goals this month. Nothing big - just little steps that take you where you want to go. A step is something that moves you towards your goals, and either takes at least 15 minutes or is emotionally difficult (like making a call you've been dreading). A goal is anything that moves you forward towards what you want. It doesn't have to be part of a lofty, thought-out goal. If you want to get in shape, your exercise sessions are steps. If you think you ought to get out more, getting out is a step. Each day, check in with the steps you've made so far.

From my list for this week: 1. Revise & finalize goals statement for MSN application; pay for spring semester classes; review what else I need to do to apply for the Nursing grad program; figure out how to get the books for the classes & what books they are; look into a recording device to record notes; price laptops. 2. For LPN teaching job: review the emailed material; (keep reading the books); set up an organized notebook; get ready for meeting on next Monday; schedule pre-employment Health Exam(make note to have copy sent to CNA job site too);take the sexual harassment on-line seminar; get an ID from the school; Make a list of teaching matherials I'll need (stethoscope, lab coat etc...) 3. CNA teaching job: set up separate notebook of their materials; mail in rest of papers to HR (done today); send transcripts (yes, I have to send my college transcripts in order to get a teaching job!!! to both schools and to the Masters program); take the on line sexual harassment seminar-(same one as for #2???) 4. clc=pay for seminar (done today); review the web site materials for the seminar 5. Set up my calendar for next spring---note the dates the schools are closed 6. Send out more resumes 7. clean computer area and organize (started on this one today & it looks much better) 8. Pay my parking ticket & some bills (paid the rent today) 9. Work with Tanya on the school supplemental stuff every night---give as many positive 'strokes' and encouragements as possible... That should start Dec. off nicely. sallypz (MoxieMe)

Hi all Mannix, I was really glad to see your post because I had completely forgotten it was a new month and hadn't started off the Challenges theads. Hi Sally :D The main goal for me on here this month is regarding my address book. Although I had believed I'd updated it since last year, I hadn't and already messed up a number of Christmas cards, so will have to find new envelopes. I've also discovered that my bag of letters and greeting cards sent to me this year so I can refer to seems to have gone missing too. For someone that tried to get organised re birthdays, Christmas this year I seem to be very unorganised now the event is upon us :? So by the end of December I hope to have a new system in place. (weird thing just happened as I was writing this, all of a sudden there was this strange laughing coming from the computer, like a child's - nearly jumped off my seat. I presume it must have come from a previous site I visited and it was an ad............ either that or my computer is haunted!) Looking forward to reading all your posts this month.

Hi, everyone, This month is going to be a big challenge for me. My husband's entire family is coming to stay with us for 2 weeks over the holidays! And before that, we will be having new floors installed in our house, and I have 2 long holiday gigs. So ... emotionally, my goal is to try and maintain some semblance of control and not let my in-laws drive me crazy. More specifically, recognize it's okay for me to say "no" to anything my brother-in-law and sister-in-law propose, if I don't want to do it. On the other hand, accept that they are going to get on my nerves. Think of constructive ways to blow off steam. As for concrete actions, 1. Complete clearing out the house prior to floor installation (needs to be done by the end of the weekend). We're storing all are stuff in the garage. The garage almost looks like a converted spare room, sans heat. 2. Practice violin for 2 3-hour holiday gigs. 3. Review this month's schedule for which days I'm going to teach. (Should I try to teach with the in-law crowd staying here?) 4. Make a list of things I'd like to do over the holidays that I can do by myself. Also some things I'd be willing to do with in-laws. 5. Begin and finish all holiday shopping! 6. Keep up with blog. I've been getting more responses from my posting on Ancestry.com. Someone asked for more details about my grandfather, which I posted last night. I see I have a response, so hopefully the poster has some ideas. 7. Continue Alexander Technique classes as regularly as possible through the holidays. I'm really going to need this. 8. Resume taking gym classes after we're done preparing for the floors. Will really need these, too! :) Hope everyone's getting into the end-of-the-year spirit! Meanwhile, I'm trying not to turn into Scrooge. -- Mannix

Hello, Mannix, sounds like a challenge, once they arrive, start counting down the days left! Unity, it's always the things we care about most that have pockets of surprising disarray. PLG: Another month added to you-know-what! Sally: your 'busted day' seems productive in its own way. For me: got to my first Reiki circle since beginning FT work. Man or man, did I miss it. Going to build it into my schedule. There's one that meets the first and third weeks, and another that meets the second and fourth. I suppose on of these months I'll make to them all. I have a birthday coming up Wednesday and have been pondering what to 'theme' this next year on. Stay tuned. Have a small party in the works to take advantage of a restaurant's deal (birthday person on the house). Got to two live music events this week (music students Jazz concerts at a local university). Also miss live music. My spirits take off and wander around. And, had two assistants at work chugging along on one of my projects today! Something I never had when self-employed (I sometimes would have a single assistant, most often zero assistant). In the market for new lenses for my glasses, and I'm shocked at the stubbornly high prices. Shock-ed! It seems there's an attitude that since "insurance" might pay then let's crank up the prices. No one is watching the bill. Grr. I did buy from online two years ago, mixed quality, but I can replace them every 9 months for the prices I pay for one 'high' quality set locally. I am running out of time to buy these with my flex-plan money, so have to factor that in as well. It's not that I can't afford it, it's the attitude. Lynx

Hi all Mannix, good news you're finally getting the floors done. Family arriving for 2 weeks :D I bet you will be ready for a holiday afterwards. Your last post mentioned needing to be out of the house, a good time for one of your exploration trips maybe? Lynx, I hope you enjoy your activities which are coming up, and your party if that goes ahead. I bet you really enjoyed returning to your reiki circle, it sounds like you missed it. Don't you sound very professional - two assistants! Are they good workers? Your mention about glasses reminded me I've put off getting new ones for me. For some reason I'm told I can't get new glasses unless I have an eye exam (which I have a phobia over). My glasses are fine but the metal reacts to my skin and makes it go green :D I never realised you could buy lenses online. So that's what you are going to do again then Lynx? Sally I've never seen sock snowmen. I bet they were fun to make. PLG - I didn't think you'd be dancing back there again after your posts last month. But I recognise that you like going there and being part of it all. I have a love/hate relationship with my local cafes or bars. I like going to relax, have a chat or read a magazine but always get people offloading their problems. I don't feel able to tell them to go away.

Mannix--sounds like a busy, stressful month. Hope the floor is in and all moved back in the house before the visitors come. Lynx--Happy Birthday. I have a December birthday too---at the end of the month after Christmas. I went to buy a new glasses case---can't find one anywhere. Walmart etc...use to sell them....not any more around here. Unity--I'd seen sock snowmen before when I'd researched how to make a flowers out of baby socks for a baby shower. I googled for general directions this time too. Very easy to make. Can also make snowmen out of a child's mitten...but they don't seem to be selling mittens around here, only gloves. PLG--good luck with Fred. sallypz (MoxieMe)

Sally, when you mentioned flowers out of baby socks, do you mean those that look like cakes? e.g. cupcakes made from socks? I'm probably complicating matters here :D Have you considered making a glasses case? Lynx - did you have your party? Let us know how it went.

Hi, everyone, It's been a stressful weekend. On the way home from the horse farm last Friday, I got a flat tire! I was able to pull off onto a gravel road and call Triple A, but I had to wait about 25 minutes and it got dark. It's really dark out there at night - no street lights, etc. I guess 25 minutes isn't too bad, but apparently the flat tire is so badly damaged it cannot be repaired. So on top of everything else, we'll have to sink some money on new tires this week. :? We're still working on clearing out the house. The workers are supposed to arrive tomorrow morning around 9am. My husband doesn't want me to take off while the work is being done. He says I need to do short trips and check back on their progress throughout the day in case there are problems or questions. So much for a drive. Anyway, we'll be working on clearing and boxing up stuff probably the rest of the evening. We had to cancel out on a football party we were supposed to attend this evening because there's still so much to do. I'm bummed. Hoping to get back to some other goals, at least a few minutes at a time, next week. Sally, thanks for the sympathy. I think the floors will be in before the visitors arrive. The bigger problems is we have no working bathroom on the ground floor, but that can't be repaired until after the floors are installed. (Maybe if they all have to share 1 upstairs bathroom, they won't stay as long. ) Gotta go. Hope to be in a better mood next time. -- Mannix

Unity-- try these sites for samples of baby sock flowers: http://www.creative-baby-shower-ideas.com/baby-sock-rose.html http://www.ehow.com/how_2106691_make-baby-scok-roses.html see sidebar for videos http://bluebonnetvillage.com/corsage.htm Baby sock flowers can be made into a 'rose bouquet' a 'rosebud bouquet' (theyre wound slightly different for this), a corasage, a boutioneer these can also be made with child size socks or adult size socks but I think the technique might be slightly different. Try googling Baby Sock Flowers for other examples. People have made businesses from making these too---some of them will come up if you google Baby Sock Flowers. I thik what you are talking about are diaper cakes--also look fun to make---also people have made businesses of selling these. fFor samples of these try googling Diaper Cakes or look at these sites: http://www.creative-baby-shower-ideas.com/diaper-cake.html http://www.creative-baby-shower-ideas.com/baby-shower-craft.html or a baby Towel Cakes can be made with receiving blankets and decorated with small baby items. I made a 'Spa Cake" for a friend for her birthday---a Towel Cake decorated with small 'travel size' bath items and shampoos. It was two tier and topped off with a bath puff--it turned out very cute. This kind of cake can also be made with a bottle of bubble bath at the center (or a bottle of wine) and the towels wrapped around it to form the 'cake'. See: http://www.creative-baby-shower-ideas.com/towel-cake.html or google Towel Cakes. Went to a pre-semester meeting about my teaching job today...long meeting...lasted 4 hours...but now I have a real good idea of what is expected. Was very tired after. We're suppose to have "up to 6 inches" of snow tonite here. Must go buy one of those snow brush things for my car today!! Bag of cat litter and a small shovel might be a good idea too, to carry in the trunk....and will throw a small blanket in the back seat for emergency use. Winter is here!! sallypz(MoxieMe)
