Music has not been a part of my life until recently. Some of my friends have a lot of musical talent and they talk about hearing music and having their lives changed by it. I want that. It doesn't touch me that deeply, but I have heard pieces that have made me cry. So I'm trying to cultivate an appreciation for it. By that I mean listen and enjoy.
Hi Elaine,
I'm so glad you're open to discovering the joy of music! Sometimes, it's a matter of finding the right music that will touch you in a very personal way.
Here's my advice (from teaching my class and my masters thesis on music!)
The RADIO is the best way to experiment with music to find what works for you. Use the "SCAN" button and let it skip around until something catches your attention. Then listen to that station for a little bit and "BE OPEN". Sometimes, we have an idea that we don't like a type of music and just shut it off before we even give it a chance.
YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED to find out you like a type of music that you would never have guessed you liked. Just leave that station on your car radio for a few days so that you can hear a range of artists within that genre. Again, people hear one piece of music and make the assumption that they don't like that genre based on ONE SONG! Give a chance. If after 3-4 days, you haven't heard ANY SONGS on that station that you like, then go back to the "SCAN BUTTON" and move on.
Good luck! Let me know if you discover something surprising!
